  PROLOGUE

Natalia stretched her legs out on her outdoor chaise, feeling the sun’s warmth on her sun-kissed skin. This was the life. Her own private beach, no one here to bother her unless she wanted them to. She adjusted her sunglasses and peered out at the ocean spread out before her, crystal blue in the afternoon sun.

She couldn’t help but steal a glance at her phone on the table beside her. Still no texts.

Natalia sighed, anxious and eager to hear back, but she might have to wait a while longer. Until then, she stretched again and basked in the sun.

“I thought you might enjoy a cocktail,” a voice said from behind her.

Her head snapped up and she smiled when she saw the person walking toward her. He was tall, at least six-three, and muscular. She was certain he worked out. He had a very nice body with a broad chest and flat stomach. He had on a pair of khaki shorts and a polo shirt, the sleeves of which were pushed up to his elbows, exposing his forearms. His skin was a beautiful bronze color as if he spent a lot of time in the sun. Enrique offered her the cocktail, and Natalia smiled, grateful.

  “Thank you, Enrique,” she said.

“Did you need a refill on your fruit, miss?” he asked, nodding toward the empty dish of fruit beside her. Natalia ate a strict raw food diet—this figure of hers didn’t come without work.

“No, but thank you for asking.”

“Very well. If you need anything, please let me know,” he said.

  “Thanks, I will.”

He went to leave, but Natalia found herself not wanting to be alone.

“Enrique, where are you from?” she asked. Natalia liked to know a little about the people who worked for her family.

“I was born in Mexico, but my family moved to the United States when I was very young. I have lived here ever since,” he said.

“What brought you to work for my father?”

“I met Mr. Cavazos a few years ago. I was working for a friend, a poor man. Mr. Cavazos said he could help me, so he hired me to drive him. He said that I would learn so much by the time I was done and would be able to find work wherever I wanted. He was right. I was working for him a few weeks later. I have never worked for anyone as generous or kind as he is,” he said.

“He...he’s very generous,” Natalia agreed. She didn’t want Enrique talking to her about her father or the family. She was sure he would say something she would regret.

“He is a good boss, also. I have worked for him for ten years, and I have never been in trouble,” he said with a wink.

Natalia couldn’t help but smile. Enrique was charming her. At the same time, she could see the way his body leaned back toward the path that would lead to the vacation house, so he probably had more work to do. Natalia didn’t mind his company, but she let him go.

  “Thank you, Enrique,” she said.

“It was my pleasure,” he said.

Natalia watched him walk away, admiring the way his body moved. She glanced at her phone again. Still nothing.

Natalia sat in her chaise, enjoying the sun and the breeze. She felt certain that Enrique had gone for lunch or for the day. She was alone, and she was okay with it. She enjoyed being by herself.

She picked up her book and started to read, but soon she heard a sound off in the distance.

  It was like a motor.

What the hell? This beach was private; no boats were supposed to pass it. But she lifted her sunglasses to look out at the sea. Sure enough, a motorboat was coming toward the beach, getting closer.

Annoyed, Natalia stood up. Maybe the boat didn’t realize where it was going. She waved her arms in the air and yelled, “Hey, get out of here! Private beach!”

The boat kept coming. Natalia didn’t like this. What if the driver was drunk? It was probably an accident waiting to happen. A figure appeared on the boat as it got closer, and she squinted, trying to see who it was, but she couldn’t tell.

A bad feeling churned inside her.

Natalia tried to keep her distance, but she didn’t want the boat to hit her beach. She started to run toward the water yelling at the driver, “Hey! Watch it! You’re going to hit my beach!” She felt the wind whip up, blowing her long, black hair into her face.

The boat didn’t stop. As it got closer, Natalia could see the figure on the boat was swaying. The boat kept coming toward the beach, but it wasn’t speeding—the pace was steady, and she realized that if it did come into shore, it would get caught in the sand first before crashing.

Just as Natalia was about to grab her phone and call for help, the figure toppled over and fell straight into the water.

Natalia yelped, alarmed. Something was wrong. The person on this boat—they were hurt.

  She had to help them.

She ran into the water until she was ankle-deep. She heard calling from the boat, but she didn’t know what the person was saying.

“Hey, are you okay?” she yelled.

The boat was coming closer to shore. It slowed down, but it hadn’t stopped.

“Hello?” she yelled again. She frantically looked for any sign of the person in the water, but she couldn’t see them.

  At that moment, something splashed.

  Something behind her.

Natalia whipped around—just as something hard smacked into the back of her skull.

Her body went weak, falling into the cold water below.

All at once, the world faded.

  CHAPTER ONE

Sitting in the parking lot outside of the prison, Agent Nicky Lyons of the FBI took a breath as she anticipated the voice on the other end of the line. Her father’s voice. Her father, who she hadn’t spoken to in years.
